Smugglers, from the infamous Reverend, Dr Syn of the Romney Marshes in the novels of Russell Thorndike to the larger-than-life Jack Rattenbury of the West Country, prospered in the eighteenth century. Gentry and Clerics were equally involved, but in these tales there is a difference.
